My Internship Project was the creation of a server that makes use of multiple Operating Systems contained in their own sectors and run on Individualized Virtual Machines (Virtual Computers) that all use specifically designated portions of the host computer. The reason that this is important, especially when looking at what I did for my internship, It becomes rather obvious, as most of our work during the four weeks I was being mentored was with servers that have been previously set up by the company. Learning to work with the software and hardware of a Server Grade Computer is extremely important for understanding the baseline of Enterprise level I.T, as well as learning to keep calm when your clients are beginning to panic because the client doesn't know what is happening with their business-wide Storage System. Getting to the point where I was able to use all functionalities of the server was extremely difficult, because of the fact that I was completely new to using and setting up a physical server computer, and repairing the hardware and ensuring that it was in working in order was extremely time consuming and took up over three days total of my internship, and required a Total explanation of networking.
Part 1:
How did you measure the success of the work you did while you were an intern? What did you learn from this? I measured the success of my work by how well the solutions I found and provided worked, and I learned that sometimes to find the correct solution you have to retread ground to get back to an earlier solution to see if it has helped the problem or impeded the repair progress. How was your work significant or meaningful to the world beyond school and your specific internship site? My work is significant as without the work that my mentors and I put in, as without the effort that we put in, the businesses that we work for would be rendered inoperable. What did you learn about your own work from your internship project? I tend to be slower than my mentors, in the fact that I am slower to proceed with a task but I am typically able to perform the task with the least amount of damage done to the computers that we are working on. What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why? I have grown to appreciate how direct my previous time working with computers as I have realized that the problems and solutions that I have encountered have been ones that I have had an easy time to rectify, while the problems that I have run into now have shown to be extremely complex and only possible to encounter if you have never used that system before. Part 2 What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why? A quality that I want to develop in myself is being able to search for the answer to a complex problem or find the steps to solve a problem, as I have had to use that skill almost every day during this internship. How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern? My view of life after high school has not changed in the slightest, in fact, what I have experienced during my time on this internship has only reinforced what I have come to expect of life after high school. Describe what you think a typical work day is like at this site.
Since I had not visited a business for career day, I had decided to take a day and study functions and completing past-due work that I needed to complete, I had set out to better myself academically. Please write a reflection about your Career Day experience. What do you expect the professional world there to be like? I expect that the professional world will be very different from the task that I have set myself upon today. I will not be able to replicate what I have done today and I hope that my attempts to better myself will carry over to my next year in high school. In what ways do you expect your high school classes and the skills you have learned to apply to this profession? I expect the lessons that I have been taught in humanities to help me a large amount in a professional environment as I have learned how to speak clearly and confidently in front of a collection of people and person who I do not Know at all. I expect my learnings in math to help me strive for a position within the fields of engineering or computer sciences. I have advocated for myself by proving my worth in this working environment and being able to give a witty comeback when there is a joke at my expense. Both of my mentors have spoken truly of themselves and each other, and will often tell their clients the truth.
I am following the advice of “how to be an intern everyone remembers”, and I have made sure to show my worth in the field of computer repair and network Diagnostics. My internship project is the creation of a server with several Virtual Machines that can run different types of software simultaneously and be controlled remotely via software installed on a separate computer that can connect to the unit via an internet connection. This server is based on two HDD (Hard Disk Drive(s)) that are linked together to form one drive with the combined capacity of the two, However, This means that if one drive is removed, than the other is rendered useless, as data is technically stored on both. The server computer uses two separate processors simultaneously in order to split the total workload of the computer. The Server Computer does not output any of the displays for the Virtual Machines that run on it, but does display a more bare bones menu where it is possible to control settings and possibly virtual machines with the installation of a software addon.
A skill that I need in order to have this function is the ability to understand proper diagnosis of errors and crashes that I will encounter while working with this piece of machinery. I have already encountered the problem of not having the right parts to upgrade or repair the server, as I had pieces that were meant to be used exclusively newer platforms. I will need support from my mentors in terms of what procedures I need to go through in order to be able to completely demonstrate my abilities and my work. A question that I have about my internship is what drove these two to work in this industry, and why have you stayed in it for so long?
The main connections that I can make between this internship and what I do at school are how similar it is to learn about working with the equipment that I use in this environment, and how I can’t put off work that has been given to me. One of my mentors was headbutted in the crotch by his son, on sit, in front of the client. I have learned that these two that work here are trying to help small businesses with their technical issues and networking requirements, as that is the area that you need the most help in nowadays. I am developing my ability to talk to people that I am unfamiliar with, and while that was not a problem that I had, I am learning more about how to deal with situations that feel uncomfortable. Since my internship is within a 15 minute drive to and/or from my house, I have been getting there by means of a short car ride with my parents, as I do not have a Driver’s License. Since the commute is extremely short, I find it very easy to get ready for work in this environment This is an Interview with my mentor, David Hinger.
When were you first interested in computers and how they worked? “I first became interested in computers when I was Eight or Nine, My mom had just purchased a “Windows 98” Computer for the family, and I was stuck on it like glue.” When did you get into the more advanced territory of commands for computers? “That was when I purchased my first computer, It was a “Windows XP” Machine, and that’s when I had tried to do some of the more advanced networking stuff that was possible in “Windows XP”, and that’s when I got into the more advanced details of commands.” What was your first job working in the field of computer maintenance and management? “My first Tech job was called “Apartments 24/7”, and I was hired as a computer Technician.” How long have you been working in the tech industry? “I’ve been working in the Tech industry for 20 years now, that’s including the time from when I wasn’t hired to work on computers too.” What was the first ever job that you worked? “The first job that I ever had was at Vons, I was a bagging boy.” When did you and your Co Worker (Chris) Meet? “Chris and I met back in early 2010 Through working at Computer Services Unlimited.” What is the workday always like? “The workday usually consists of us going to different businesses throughout Escondido and some of San Marcos and working on their computers and networks, usually to fix a major error that is compromising their safety or ability to work.” What is your Job Title? “I am the owner of Computer Services Unlimited, and Chris helps me, There are really no Titles in our company.” What strikes me most about the workplace that I am contributing to is that The workplace that I am in is not just the company that I am working for, but the companies that are paying for our services in network maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting, as we work in the buildings of our clients.
The thing that strikes me most about the people I work with in this company is that they are both extremely laid back, in the sense that they are not afraid to joke around with each other or even myself, making this strange experience rather comfortable compared to say an office with dozens of workers who barely know each other and only talk when trading off jobs and papers. What strikes me most about the work that I am doing is that the problems that I am encountering are problems that I would never run into in the environment that I have worked in, and learned almost everything I know about networking and computer repair. I am excited to be able to say that I have genuinely learned something new from this month long internship and that I will be able to apply this knowledge in most any workplace and career that I decide to pursue. I am worried that I will have to present this information completely to people who might not understand half of what I am saying, as I don’t know if the audience that I am speaking to will know what I am talking about or be left at the beginning of the presentation. |
